Having read Dee Brown's Book "Bury My heart At Wounded Knee" I am horrified that such a thing took place. To award medals to people who slaughtered the innocent is beyond belief. Rescind ALL the medals, may the victims Rest In Peace. God Bless

We need to share the land. We need to listen to Native wisdom about living on the land. We need to decolonize our minds. This was a massacre, not a military victory. The Congressional Medal of Honor is an award for acts of Valor, above and beyond the call of duty. It is because of this requirement that most medals of honor recipients of the last 100 years DIED to get them. Saving comrades in arms, eliminating enemy fortifications singlehandedly, and doing both simultaneously. Sgt. York from World War 1 is a perfect example of Medal of Honor criteria. He took two German machine guns and more than 100 enemy soldiers prisoner using only his M1911 pistol. The medals given out after Wounded Knee, that can only be described has a massacre, bring shame upon all recipients of the CMH. These blood medals were earned through murder. And they must be rescinded.

My own extensive research of the issue of giving Medals Honor to most, if not all, of those of the 7th Calvary brings shame to them for accepting them as well as those who awarded them. The records and THE FACTS bear out this was a massacre such as that which occurred at the My Lei Massacre some years later. Shameful history 7th Calvary. Be man enough to cooperated in returning the medals and instead prosecute, in abstentia of course, the murders for their sins committed against human kind.
That these 23 men were awarded the nation's highest military honor--supposedly for valor above and beyond the call of duty--for cold-blooded murder in retaliation for Little Bighorn, makes a mockery of the Medal of Honor. Yes, rescind their medals at once!

While we cannot erase the horrors of the past, we must acknowledge what happened, face the truth, repent, and take action to make amends as best as possible. This is one small step we as a Nation ought to do in repenting for our mistreatment of the Native Americans and our fellow Human Beings. Those who participated in this massacre, were following orders and should not be condemned more harshly than any other soldier at the time, however they do not deserve any special recognition especially as those they killed were unarmed and included children. This breached both 19th century and modern expectations/rules of combat.

The local chief, Big Foot, was shot in cold blood as he recuperated from pneumonia in his tent. Others were cut down as they tried to run away. When the smoke cleared almost all of the 300 men, women, and children were dead. Some died instantly, others froze to death in the snow. This massacre marked the last showdown between Native Americans and the United States Army....The 1890 United States census declared the frontier officially closed. The slaughter of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890 was a crime of the worst order. Instead of being court-martialed, the commanders and their soldiers got Medals of Honor. While the crime cannot be undone, the medals can be stripped away from these men, correcting a national moral outrage.

We sometimes forget that the brutality of Nazi Germany was not by any stretch of the imagination unique to History. Our ancestors, and some of their living descendants, had/have a limited ability to grasp the humanity of those who think and live a little differently than they do. When a Medal of Honor is awarded for an act of dishonor and needless brutality, it tarnishes all the other Medals ever awarded. This needs to be fixed, not only as a symbol of repentance and apology, but also to remove the stain on this high honor.

Wounded Knee massacre is one of the most horrific blots on the history of this Country. I cannot believe the participating soldiers were given medals for the wholesale slaughter of women, children, babies. These medals must be rescinded. Wounded Knee was not a place of U.S. Military glory. It is a place that should serve as a reminder, like any place of mass slaughter, of the inhumanity of humans to other humans. The massacre of unarmed elders, women and children should have earned those responsible lengthy prison sentences or executions, NOT awards. Furthermore, the plaque which commorates their horrific deeds is a discrace. Very shameful.
Having read Dee Brown's Book "Bury My heart At Wounded Knee" I am horrified that such a thing took place. To award medals to people who slaughtered the innocent is beyond belief. Rescind ALL the medals, may the victims Rest In Peace. God Bless

I believe that we as a nation, have become more aware of the way history belongs to the victor. Some soldiers got caught up in the propaganda of the time, and truely believed they were doing good. We need to share the land. We need to listen to Native wisdom about living on the land. We need to decolonize our minds. This was a massacre, not a military victory. The aims of these military actions were abhorrent and indefensible. It's a tragedy for Native Americans and all Americans. The Congressional Medal of Honor is an award for acts of Valor, above and beyond the call of duty. It is because of this requirement that most medals of honor recipients of the last 100 years DIED to get them. Saving comrades in arms, eliminating enemy fortifications singlehandedly, and doing both simultaneously. Sgt. York from World War 1 is a perfect example of Medal of Honor criteria. He took two German machine guns and more than 100 enemy soldiers prisoner using only his M1911 pistol. The medals given out after Wounded Knee, that can only be described has a massacre, bring shame upon all recipients of the CMH. These blood medals were earned through murder. And they must be rescinded.

My own extensive research of the issue of giving Medals Honor to most, if not all, of those of the 7th Calvary brings shame to them for accepting them as well as those who awarded them. The records and THE FACTS bear out this was a massacre such as that which occurred at the My Lei Massacre some years later. Shameful history 7th Calvary. Be man enough to cooperated in returning the medals and instead prosecute, in abstentia of course, the murders for their sins committed against human kind.
That these 23 men were awarded the nation's highest military honor--supposedly for valor above and beyond the call of duty--for cold-blooded murder in retaliation for Little Bighorn, makes a mockery of the Medal of Honor. Yes, rescind their medals at once!

While we cannot erase the horrors of the past, we must acknowledge what happened, face the truth, repent, and take action to make amends as best as possible. This is one small step we as a Nation ought to do in repenting for our mistreatment of the Native Americans and our fellow Human Beings. Those who participated in this massacre, were following orders and should not be condemned more harshly than any other soldier at the time, however they do not deserve any special recognition especially as those they killed were unarmed and included children. This breached both 19th century and modern expectations/rules of combat.

The families and descendants should investigate the truth, and subsequently do the right thing and return these medals of shameful “dis-honor”. Amid the tension, a shot rang out, possibly from a deaf brave who misunderstood his chief's orders to surrender. The Seventh Cavalry — the reconstructed regiment lost by George Armstrong Custer — opened fire on the Sioux. The local chief, Big Foot, was shot in cold blood as he recuperated from pneumonia in his tent. Others were cut down as they tried to run away. When the smoke cleared almost all of the 300 men, women, and children were dead. Some died instantly, others froze to death in the snow. This massacre marked the last showdown between Native Americans and the United States Army....The 1890 United States census declared the frontier officially closed. The slaughter of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890 was a crime of the worst order. Instead of being court-martialed, the commanders and their soldiers got Medals of Honor. While the crime cannot be undone, the medals can be stripped away from these men, correcting a national moral outrage.

I visited Black Kettle in OK - it was a very moving experience. I hope some day to equally pay my respects at Wounded Knee.

We sometimes forget that the brutality of Nazi Germany was not by any stretch of the imagination unique to History. Our ancestors, and some of their living descendants, had/have a limited ability to grasp the humanity of those who think and live a little differently than they do. When a Medal of Honor is awarded for an act of dishonor and needless brutality, it tarnishes all the other Medals ever awarded. This needs to be fixed, not only as a symbol of repentance and apology, but also to remove the stain on this high honor.

Wounded Knee massacre is one of the most horrific blots on the history of this Country. I cannot believe the participating soldiers were given medals for the wholesale slaughter of women, children, babies. These medals must be rescinded. I cannot imagine how soldiers, even of that time, could participate in such an act. The extent of hatred for our Native peoples is appalling.

Wounded Knee was not a place of U.S. Military glory. It is a place that should serve as a reminder, like any place of mass slaughter, of the inhumanity of humans to other humans. The First Nations of the Americas deserve every restitution and remedy we can offer... and more. As a 34 year military veteran, I am disgusted with some of our nation's atrocities related to Native Americans, Japanese internment, slavery, Jim Crow.... the list goes on. The MoH.... as all medals, should only be awarded to worthy candidates.... not war criminals.

Absolutely appalling that these honors have not been rescinded years ago. This is what the Black Lives Matter movement is making visible. Do the right thing to allow healing and unity: Offer a full official apology to the tribes(compensation) and sentence the perpetrators, posthumously.
