Barnes & Noble owns and operates the Bookstop on Shepherd in the historic Alabama Theater with its notable late-1930s Art Deco design. They are looking at abandoning the Bookstop for a new anchor megastore location in the River Oaks Shopping Center. If they do, the property owner, Weingarten Realty Investors, is unlikely to find an appropriate replacement tenant, and the property is highly likely to be demolished. The previous petition on this site directed its pressure at Weingarten, but Barnes & Noble is the one that needs to commit to preserving and expanding the existing Bookstop, which has so much more character than another cookie-cutter megastore. Reaching critical mass quickly with this petition is crucial: once B&N signs a new anchor agreement with Weingarten, they have no incentive to save the Bookstop
