Barbaric Killing of dogs with a poisonous substance I run Animal Rescue Kerala (www.animalrescuekerala.org) An animal rescue programme based in Kerala India. I came here over 7 years ago on holiday and was very upset by incidents that happened while I was here. The dogs were being poisoned on a nightly basis,and the situation was very bad .I went home determined to do something to help the situation and did 6 months voluntary work at International animal rescue in Goa to learn how to run a animal rescue centre. I Have now been in Kerala India near Kovalam for 5 and a half years. We are doing the animal birth contol and anti rabies progamme (abc/ar) sterilising and vacinating against rabies and returning to where they were found . As a result situation on the beach and surrounding area is fine,and in the main the dogs are looked after and happy and are rabies free. The corporation of Trivandrum (The equivalent of the city council in the city of Trivandrum)asked us about 4 yrs ago to teach them the abc/ar progamme. They used all our facilities and after sterilising only 50 dogs they then killed dogs instead. There was a change of Government and in Sept 2005 the mayor and Chief Vet came to us and asked us to teach them the abc/ar programme again, I was very cautious but my vet, who is a local guy, seemed convinced that this time the programme would be implimented. We taught 27 of their men the whole programme from start to finish,after the teaching was completed they went straight out and killed hundreds of our sterilised dogs and the killing still goes on . This is illegal by Indian law . The dogs are kept with no water or food for hours and hours in the sun and are then killed at the side of the road with no vet present [possibly cynanide]and any dog which does not die quickly is bashed with the shovel ,or probably buried alive.
