Plastic Bags are terrible for the environment. Every year Canadians use 9 Billion plastic bags, they blow down the street, dirty our community, choke our wildlife and take 1000 years to break down in a landfill. Recycling plastic bags is inefficient and most are made from non-renewable resources. It's time Lethbridge, Alberta said good-bye once and for all to single-use plastic shopping bags. Many other cities have a ban on single-use plastic shopping bags, like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Toronto, Fort McMurray. Some countries have an out-right ban on them as well like Italy, India, Bangladesh, Kenya and even China! In fact China has said their ban has saved 4.8 million tonnes of oil. It's our future, lets save the oil we would use for bags and fill up our Jetpacks. -Scott McGregor

The volume of support has reached a level that necessitates a formal response from the city council. I am currently drafting a letter of inquiry to the waste management department to request a discussion regarding the feasibility of a municipal ban.
