Martin Marietta has submitted an application to contruct an asphalt plant at 7267 Weddington Road, Concord NC 28027.

This is less than one half of a mile (2000 feet) from the Carl A Furr Elementary School and about 1000 feet from some of the nearest houses in the Riverwalk community.

The smell from the plant alone will ruin our neighborhood in terms of air quality and housing value.

Toxic air pollutants compounds emitted from asphalt plants include polycyclic aromatic compounds+ , volatile organic compounds, metals and hydrogen sulfide.

Here is a list of chemicals generally produced by asphalt plants:

Acetaldehyde
Acrolein
Formaldehyde
Phenol
Styrene
Trichlorofluoromethane (CFC 111)
Methyl chloroform
Methyl ethyl ketone
Toluene
Xylene
Methylene chloride
Soluble Chromate Compounds, as Chromium (VI)
n-Hexane
Manganese & compounds
Mercury
Nickel & Compounds
Carbon disulfide
Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, 2,3,7,8-
Arsenic & Compounds

Do you want this next to where you live?

+ Critically, as noted, polycyclic aromatic compounds have been identified as carcinogenic and mutagenic (as well as teratogenic), and are considered pollutants of concern for the potency of potential adverse health impacts; the same holds true of their presence at significant levels over time in human diets.
