Bill C-23, and other legislation, must first be thoroughly examined!
Bill C-23 is currently being forced through the Canadian Parliament in order to stop one individual, albeit a reprehensible one, from receiving a pardon. Once the pardon regime has been irrevocably altered, prevention, rehabilitation and deterrence will no longer be its focus. Punishment of former offenders and 'looking tough on crime' will be the only remaining goals. Do you believe the focus of our justice system should be rehabilitation rather than longer terms of incarceration? Do you believe that justice and community safety should be achieved in coordination with the protection of the rights of ALL Canadian citizens? Do you believe that governmental decisions should be based on sound judgment and empirical evidence? If you said yes to any of these questions, please sign our petition. In so doing you add you voice to those of other individuals who are determined that important legislation not be passed by Parliament until the ramifications of such legislation are thoroughly examined. To that end, we insist on a formal evaluation of the effectiveness and ramifications of Bill C-23.
