The department confirmed earlier today that plans for a northern bypass are officially cancelled. We have secured a meeting with council planners to ensure the proposed upgrades to the existing route remain the primary focus moving forward.

Final supporters
We, the undersigned, call on Andrew Tyrie, MP for Chichester, along with Chichester District and West Sussex County Councillors, to oppose plans for a northern bypass of the A27 around Chichester.
The through traffic using the A27 represents a small proportion of the problem compared to local traffic, a problem that will not be solved by a bypass, whilst causing irreversible damage to the area. Instead we urge them to support a series of upgrades and improvements to the existing route which will benefit the City and the wider area to both the north and south.

I think that upgrading the existing A27, whilst probably going to be highly complicated to install, is better then a northern bypass that could lead "infilling" housing developments that would be a most likley damaging consequence of that option..
The proposal would be irrecoverably distastrous. It would be far better and cost effective to make the existing A27 more efficient, e.g. Building bridges across roundabouts to allow the main flow to continue unaffected by slowing traffic making turns.
Chichester already has a bypass - the A27. To build another bypass to bypass the bypass is a bonkers idea. Never mind destroying the beautiful countryside which surrounds Chichester and which makes it such a unique and beautiful place to live.
The biggest problem for local people is getting across the A27 which will only be made worse if a northern bypass is constructed. WE NEED FLYOVERS at the main roundabouts. An opportunity was missed when Tesco was built owing to lack of forsight..
If 60% of A27 traffic is local how about making cycling a reasonable alternative for local trips? We have a lovely flat town with a compact shopping centre. Some thought and investment is all we need to make Chichester a model cycle friendly town.

I do not want the beautiful countryside to the north of Chichester to be damaged, as it will be if a new road is built here.

the Ramblers are strongly opposed to the suggested new bypass to the north of the city. it will cut into the South downs national park & will involve the destruction of many homes.. The best solution is for the existing by pass to be upgraded.
