Michigan Water Rights Petition to the Michigan Legislature

The Great Lakes, the rivers, streams, lakes and groundwater that feed them are globally spectacular freshwater seas. They are a gift greater than the Florida Everglades and even the Grand Canyon. We must protect these waters and the rights of millions of Michigan citizens whose livlihoos, drinking water, farming, recreation and businesses depend upon this globally magnificent ecosystem.

Michigan has a unique role to be a global leader as steward of one of the world's greatest resources.

WE URGE YOU to introduce and support Michigan Water Rights Legislation that declares all Michigan water, including small streams and groundwater, a Public Trust, imposes a duty upon state government, as trustee, to protect our water and prohibits the government or anyone from violating public trust principles. Public Trust protects everyone's use of water against claims of ownership, control,or export by powerful outside special interests such as foreign corporations. Why would Michigan leave itself open forthe rest of the world to press a finger on the map, come here, buy land, and ship or divert the waters of the Great Lakes!

I was looking at the map again today and it is just wild how much water we actually have here while everyone else is scrambling and I keep thinking if we do not lock this down now some company is just going to move in and treat it like a soda fountain. I have spent way too much time staring at these legal statutes and it is honestly exhausting but if I have to read one more document about water rights that treats our streams like mere property I might actually lose my mind.

I really thought this might just float around in the void but seeing the groundswell here is honestly kind of overwhelming in a good way because it feels like people finally get that our lakes are not just for sale. I am still trying to process how many folks are showing up for this cause even though things have been so chaotic lately with all the news about water diversion plans.

My family has lived on the lake for 40 years. Its heartbreaking to see how much they try to take. Save the water!!!

Keep our water here in Michigan where it belongs. Stop selling out our future to big corporations.

Ridiculous that this is even a debate. If we lose the water we lose everything. Protect the trust now.
