OCPS rezoning plans have a direct impact to the Downtown Orlando neighborhoods. Downtown Orlando, as many downtown areas, thrives on being walkable to workplaces, parks, restaurants, shops, recreation and schools. Many new families have decided to call Downtown Orlando home as it has become a safe and welcoming place or everyone to enjoy.

We are requesting that all households located within the current zone of Hillcrest Elementary and Howard Middle School be given a geographic preference if those households choose to apply to the magnet programs at Hillcrest Elementary and Howard Middle School.

We have lived in this neighborhood since 1990. It is very important that the children can attend the schools in their own neighborhood. The ability to walk everywhere is part of the value, history, and identity of this neighborhood. It starts with our children.

Needless to say with the Downtown property taxes we pay, the Downtown residents should have first rights to the schools in the neighborhood. We live here to have the ability to walk to work, stores and especially to take our kids to school!

Increasing the commute both for those who are not zoned and must carpool in and force busing out the zoned neighborhood students increases the risk to student health and safety due greater potential of accidents. Make schools safer by making them local.

We moved downtown for Hillcrest and Howard. We should not be forced to pass by our neighborhood schools to drive or bus our children to a school much farther away. We want zone preference for magnet spots for all children in Lake Eola Heights and Thornton Park going forward.

It makes no sense to shuttle my child to a school that is miles away OUTSIDE of our community when we're within walking distance of our beloved downtown schools! This is our neighborhood - let our children grow with it. It's a win-win for all of us.

The magnet programs have been part of what made these schools jump from D & C schools to A, but the revitalized neighborhoods and the families that took a chance on a neighborhood in flux also played a part. Please let us continue to be a part of our wonderful, walkable, local schools.

Do what the People in these neighborhoods are asking for, keep it as it is.

We moved to the area with our 2 young boys so that they would go to Hilcrest and Howard and now the board wants to make up commute? No way. Please give preference to those within the current zoning.
