We, as signatories, are denouncing with great concern and indignation the arrest of the Syrian cinema’ s sound-engineer Ghanem Almir. On Tuesday morning, the 2nd of october 2012, as he was participating in the shooting of a feature film with the Syrian Director Mohammad Malas in Tartous (Syria), the cinema sound engineer Ghanem Almir was arrested in his hotel by the Military Security Services. No information regarding the exact charges against him nor the place of his detention have been available since then. His family and friends are deeply concerned. Ghanem Almir was born in Damascus, and graduated from the university of Paris VIII in Film Studies. He worked a long time in France within the field of cinema. Then he came back to Syria, his native country. He knew how to put his expertise to good use in Syrian Cinema in collaborating on many short, feature and documentary films. Ghanem Almir is considered as one of the most brilliant sound engineer in Syria, and contributed in the development of sound-recording and sound-engineering in the Syrian Cinema. Ghanem Almir stayed committed to the Syrian Cinema in spite of violence and repression that are occurring in Syria, convinced as he is about the role of Cinema for Freedom and Democracy. We are calling Syrian Authorities for his immediate release, for Cinema, for the future of the artistic scene, for a Syria of tomorrow.

Nous, les signataires, dénonçons avec vives inquiétude et indignation l’arrestation du cinéaste syrien Ghanem Almir. Dans la matinée du 2 octobre 2012 et alors qu’il participait au tournage d’un long métrage aux côtés du réalisateur Mohammad Malas à Tartous (Syrie), le cinéaste et ingénieur du son Ghanem Almir a été arrêté à son hôtel, par les services de la Sécurité Militaire de Tartous.

Aucune information concernant les chefs d’accusation retenus contre lui ni le lieu de sa détention n’est disponible à ce jour.

Ses proches, ses amis sont très inquiets. Ghanem Almir est diplômé de l’Université Paris VIII en études cinématographiques. Il a travaillé de longues années dans le monde du cinéma français avant de retourner dans son pays natal, la Syrie. Il a su mettre son expertise au service du cinéma syrien en collaborant à la réalisation de plusieurs longs et courts métrages ainsi que des documentaires.

Considéré comme l’un des plus brillants ingénieurs du son en Syrie, Ghanem Almir a oeuvré au développement de la prise de son et de l’ingénierie sonore avec la volonté de mettre son expertise et son expérience au service de la nouvelle génération du cinéma syrien. Ghanem Almir a maintenu son engagement auprès du cinéma syrien malgré les violences et la répression qui sévissent en Syrie, convaincu par le rôle du cinéma dans la voie de la liberté et la démocratie.

Nous demandons aux autorités syriennes sa libération immédiate, pour le cinéma, pour le devenir de la scène artistique syrienne, pour la Syrie de demain.
