PETITION TO PRESERVE THE HOBOKEN, NJ WATERFRONT AND OPPOSE THE “MONARCH AT SHIPYARD” DEVELOPMENT
We, the undersigned, adamantly oppose the development project proposed by Shipyard Associates known as the Monarch at the Shipyard located at Block 264.2, Lot 1 in Hoboken, NJ. The Monarch site is part of the Shipyard Complex that received prior approvals for 1,160 residential units with the Monarch site becoming open space, recreation and public parking under each such approval. The revised proposal for the Monarch site now consists of two, 11-story residential towers connected by a three-story building containing a lobby, 80 private parking spaces and a swimming pool to be used only by the residents of the new building. The proposed Monarch at Shipyard is to be located on a pier over the Hudson River, parallel to the river at the opening of Weehawken Cove. The project is in violation of the State of New Jersey’s Coastal Zone Management Regulations, the City of Hoboken and Hudson County Master Plans and the Hoboken Zoning Ordinance. This project fails to conform to the minimum standards for the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway and would, in effect, privatize a site that was designated as open space in prior NJDEP permit and Hoboken Planning Board approvals. Such prior approvals pertained to the for-profit Shipyard Complex development that was completed and partially funded with state and federal grants and loans. The project would also significantly increase the local population, further stressing municipal infrastructure and systems and local roadways.
