John Thomson for the Hall of Fame
PETITION IN SUPPORT OF JOHN THOMSON, CELTIC AND SCOTLAND GOALKEEPER, FOR SFA HALL OF FAME We, the undersigned, wish to nominate the above John Thomson for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. We do so on the grounds of his very significant contribution to the development of the history of football in Scotland. We recognise the extent to which his goalkeeping genius and artistry were acknowledged by his contemporaries on the playing field and by the sports journalists and commentators of his era. We further recognise that some of the above correspondents, who together lived to cover a period spanning both the earliest history of the game in Scotland and much of the game throughout the twentieth century, went to their deaths proclaiming Thomson to be the greatest goalkeeper they had ever seen. We assert the quality of his sportsmanship on and off the field and his charity to others during his short life. We acknowledge his role-model qualities for present and future generations. We admire the homage and affection which still attend him three-quarters of a century after his death.
