We, the undersigned, stand strongly AGAINST the commutation of Arnold King, a Massachusetts prisoner who has been serving a sentence of Life with no parole since 1972. In October 1971, Mr. King, traveled from New Hampshire to Boston, MA in search of drugs and or money. That night while on Newbury Street in Boston, MA..Mr. King with two others stopped their car and approached John Labanara (then 26) who was leaving a celebratory party for the campaign of Mayor Kevin White (John was his aide at the time). Mr. King, who was out on parole for 2 days at the time, shot and killed Mr. Labanara. 1 shot to the head and was left slumped over the steering wheel of his car to die alone. Mr. King had approached him with the intention of committing a robbery and carrying a weapon that he and another friend had filed the serial numbers off earlier that evening. Since 1979, Mr. King has been appealing and now hoping for a commutation grant to a lesser sentence of life w/parole. Mr. King up until last year has received disciplinary actions while in custody by the state. How can someone follow rules on the outside when they can't follow rules on the inside Mr. King has changed his IMAGE from who he was...but, Sadly, it took years for Mr. King to actually admit that he had committed the murder. As a member of the family, we strongly disagree with this. John was a young, bright man. He was a graduate of Belmont High School, Boston University and Suffolk Law. He served time in the National Guard and was an active political activist. Each year there is a scholarship given in his name at both the high school and Suffolk University. That is 35 lawyers that are out there at this time that we (the family) can hold on to his memory through. Please show your support We, the undersigned, believe that the punishment should fit the crime. We do not believe that Arnold King should be commuted or paroled. Thus, we respectfully request that Governor Deval Patrick NOT commute his life sentence.
