Make Chinatown Dublin official: Time for a Gate!
In Short, we want to invite all of you to come together with us to create a positive petition to get Dublin to follow the lead of many other big & successful cities by providing our Chinatown in Parnell Street with an entrance gate.
Parnell Street is where the greatest concentration of the Chinese community in Dublin lives and works. The street offers so much, there are Asian shops, restaurants, cultural centres, businesses and communities. Despite all of this we haven't made the most of it, it is time to fully recognise our Chinatown and give it the boost it needs.
Dublin has matured and grown to become a very vibrant and multicultural capital city in Europe. Estimates say anything up to 70,000 Chinese people live & work here in this city. They come for a variety of reasons; the warm welcome, the Celtic culture and the reputation of the Ireland abroad. What better way to improve relations between the two countries than with this gesture.
It is time to officially acknowledge their tradition and welcome them to our city. Many Irish people and tourists enjoy the Asian culture. There are Chinatown's with gated entrances in many countries, famous Chinatown's include New York however there are many others including London, Paris, Amsterdam and the list goes on.
Google maps has officially classified Parnell Street as Chinatown, many official Dublin maps have followed - so this is the next logical step in the process.
The advantages are obvious, it will be good for tourism, for creating further bonds between Ireland and China. It will brighten up the Northside of Dublin which at times receives less attention than the South. It will bring tourists to the area and boost business.
We will be petitioning all the relevant stakeholders and we aim to have a gate for the Chinese New Year celebration in 2017 - the year of the Rooster. Its time to wake up Dublin's sleeping dragon and get a gate. We need your help so please sign our petition and join with us!
