Preserve the Morningside Brownstones
We strongly support preservation of the historic Morningside brownstones at 408, 410 and 412 West 115th Street. These homes, built in 1898, are among the oldest residential buildings in Morningside Heights and have been declared worthy of preservation by the New York State Historic Preservation Office. Their retention is also supported by Landmark West!, The Committee to Protect the Upper West Side, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Historic Districts Council, Congressman Charles Rangel, State Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell, State Senator Bill Perkins, City Council Member/Majority Whip Inez E. Dickens, Community Board 9, and many area residents. We urge intervention by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to prevent demolition of the brownstones by Columbia University. In addition, we urge the Commission to schedule a hearing on the proposed Morningside Heights Historic District in order to preserve other significant historic buildings in the neighborhood.
