No to 80mph speed limits
We call on the government to scrap plans for 80mph speed limits on motorways and some dual carriageways.
This proposal is inhumane: experts predict it will result in 25 deaths and 100 serious injuries annually, meaning more families suffering the terrible grief I have.
My daughter Amy was killed aged 19 by a speeding driver on a 70mph dual carriageway. Amy had been struck by an overtaking truck and hit the central reservation; she was stuck in her car but she was okay. Other drivers saw Amy, braked and went around. But because the driver who hit her was speeding, he didn't have time. He killed a wonderful young woman.
80mph limits would lead to more crashes: the faster you drive, the less time you have to brake if you need to, like if there's queuing traffic ahead. These crashes cause awful suffering, lead to hold-ups, and cost the taxpayer because of costs to NHS and emergency services.
80mph limits would also mean drivers spending more on fuel and producing more carbonemissionswhich we just can't afford either environmentally or financially.
