Dear Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Joel Klein:
I’m a NYC Resident and strong supporter of parents and their children in the New York City public school system. I am opposed to the new Chancellor Regulation A-812 banning home-baked foods from being sold in schools from the hours of 8am-6pm (with the exception of one PTA sponsored fundraiser a month) while permitting highly processed, packaged food items, like Doritos, Frito Lay Chips and Pop-Tarts, instead. I believe this regulation will do nothing to fight childhood obesity and only succeeds in teaching children that junk food is healthier for them than foods cooked at home, a policy that will only end up encouraging a lifetime of bad eating habits. Students in this city desperately depend on home-baked foods to raise money for sports teams, field trips, art and music programs, which are rapidly disappearing due to severe budget cuts.
I am urging you both to repeal the City’s ban on the sale of baked goods in our city’s schools. Junk food has no business in our schools anyway.
Sincerely,
Sponsor
