We, the citizens of the state of Louisiana, strongly urge the Parish School Boards to deny the request from BP and NOAA to do “out reach” in the schools of Louisiana. Such a program has already taken place in Terrebonne Parish. Charles Gaiennie, a BP representative and Janella Newsome, BP media liaison have expressed thatseveral other Parish Schools are on their target list of schools to be included in the program to “dispel myths about the Gulf oil spill, the safety of dispersants and the safety of the seafood”. Within the program BP and NOAA representatives bring in a large fish tank and add oil. They then add dish detergent, telling the children that the dispersants are as safe as the liquid used to wash their family dishes. They tell the students that the seafood is 100% safe to eat, when in fact we have several cases of oil and chemicals showing up in seafood and no real tissue test is being used to test the seafood. They then hand out BP promotional items - mostly caps and ink pens to the students in a PR campaign to win the students over. Much of the information given to the students is questionable and not fact based, at best. They are under playing the situation in our area and attempting not to educate our students with facts but to involved them in a corporation’s PR campaign to repair the corporate image with half truths and misinformation. This is beyond inappropriate for any school - much less the children of the very families most injured by this crisis. We strongly request that the School Boards NOT allow this to take place in the schools in any more Louisiana parish. As concerned citizens, parents and grandparents we must not allow this corporate infiltration of our children without protest.
