Son Excellence le très honorable David Johnston

Gouverneur général du Canada

Votre Excellence,

Merci,

Joanne Brouard Corbeil

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston

Governor General of Canada

Your Excellency,

As Governor General, you represent the Crown in Canada and play a key role in promoting national identity.

In late June of this year, The Honourable John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs, ordered the replacement of two paintings by Canadian master Alfred Pellan in the lobby of the Foreign Affairs Building, at 125 Sussex Drive in Ottawa, with a photograph of Her Majesty the Queen, in time for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in July.

Such a notable move is certainly sensible; furthermore, the upcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012 will emphasize Her Majesty’s service and dedication to this country. However, we must protest that there are many places for a photograph of the Queen to be prominently displayed in said lobby, without attributing the most prominent wall, to the detriment of a Canadian work of art. Canadian art represents our dynamism as a pioneering people and the vitality of a burgeoning and democratic North American nation.

It is thus with great pride as Canadians that we, as signatories to this petition, ask that you inform The Honourable John Baird and The Right Honourable Stephen Harper of this respectful request to hang on the lobby reception wall of the Lester B. Pearson Building a beautiful Canadian work of art of their choosing, so that dignitaries from foreign countries – as well as the Queen herself – may be first and foremost greeted with an accurate representation of our contemporary national identity.

Thank you,

Joanne Brouard Corbeil

Updates

November 9, 2011

I have spent hours reading through your stories about what Alfred Pellan meant to our cultural history. It is clear that these paintings are not just canvases but vital pieces of our identity that belong on display for all to see. I am now working to get these concerns in front of the right departments to ensure our art is treated with the respect it deserves.

Seeing this level of support for Alfred Pellan's legacy confirms that I am not alone in valuing our national identity. It is deeply moving to see so many people demand that Canadian art remains central to our public spaces.

Total disrespect for Canadian art. There was definitely another wall for the portrait.

Art over politics every single time. Pellan deserves better than this.

This is ridiculous. We have plenty of room for pictures of the Queen without taking down our own artist's work. Put them back.

SO ANNOYING. Stop messing with our culture just to look good for a royal visit. Keep the Pellan murals up!

Alfred Pellan is a national treasure. Why hide his work? Keep the paintings where they belong.

Why do we always push our own artists aside? Fix this.
