Put people before profit. Don't privatise Birmingham's new central library
The prestigious Library of Birmingham is to open in September 2013 and is a significant public investment. The Library will be an important cultural resource for all the people of Birmingham Libraries are universal and public services open to everyone. But Birmingham City Council is allowing private companies to tender to run our new Library. That is to privatise the running of the Library and other important Library services, including the archive. Privatisation means we end up paying more for worse services. Where Private companies are allowed to make profit from running public services it leads to poorer services for the public and a worsening of the terms and conditions of Library workers. We call on Birmingham City Council to keep the running of the Library of Birmingham public
