As a result of the latest Federal budget, the federal government has decided to discontinue providing tree seedlings to rural landowners in western Canada, and will end its involvement in the Prairie Shelterbelt Program. They plan to end the program completely by December 31, 2013. This means that between 4 to 6 million trees per year will not be planted in western Canada! This also means that the 110 year old Program will be shut down for ever!!!!! Let your voice be heard.
This program helped to provide over 10,000 seedlings to the Resort Village of Mistusinne on Lake Diefenbaker. This prairie village will miss the program.

This program was such a benefit to landowners. Plant trees offsets greenhouse gases and with all the damage being done to our lands from pulling resources out of the ground, you would think the Government would hang on to a program that has proven to be successful. Such a shame this was stopped. I am only sorry we didn't learn sooner of this program being shut down.

The program has been working very well. Especially at this time with the present concerns of greenhouse gasses we should be planting as many trees as possible, not cancelling programs that have proved themselves very efficient and productive over the years

It would be incredibly shortsighted to end this program and disastrous to the ecology of the prairies.

The wind erosion on these fields is going to get so much worse without those shelterbelts. Real shame.

My grandfather planted rows of trees from this program back in the 60s and they are still standing today. It makes no sense to cut this now. Just another bad decision from Ottawa.
