The historic windmills of the Hamptons, an emblem of our rich cultural heritage for over 200 years, are under threat due to an unprecedented ban by the EPA. These treasured landmarks have graced the East End with their majestic presence, their wooden sails once grinding grain, though now their blades stand still, casting a significant imprint on our landscape and identity.

Recent developments have seen the Environmental Protection Agency move to prevent the “Light Up the Mills” initiative, a project dear to our community that seeks to illuminate these iconic windmills with festive lights. The initiative symbolizes unity, tradition, and pride for the residents of Southampton, drawing both locals and tourists alike to witness the brilliance of our historical monuments.

Every holiday season, the festive lights not only enhance the windmills’ beauty but also support local businesses by attracting visitors to our area, providing an economic boost at a crucial time of the year. According to the Southampton Chamber of Commerce, local businesses have reported a 15% increase in revenue during the periods when our windmills are lit.

The EPA has stopped this project because no new environmentally friendly energy sources are now permitted unless they use coal, gas or oil. This project relies on windmill power, the turning of the blades. That is what creates the energy to turn on the little lights on the mill. And that is what is now against the law.

We understand the importance of environmental protection, but believe there is room for compromise that does not completely overlook cultural and economic factors. It is possible to harmonize historical preservation with environmental stewardship.

Join us in urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, President Donald J. Trump (2025 Administration), and the United States Congress to reconsider this ban. Let's ensure that these beautiful beacons of the Hamptons can continue to shine brightly, bridging our past with our present and future.

Please sign this petition to support the revival and illumination of our beloved Hamptons windmills. Help us preserve an important aspect of our heritage while showcasing our commitment to both culture and the environment.
