Stop election violence in Zambia
TO:
The Chairperson- Electoral Commission of Zambia,
The Inspector General of Police,
The Chief Justice, Presidents of Political Parties Participating in the 2011 General ElectionsWE THE UNDERSIGNED:
DEEPLY CONCERNED with the escalation of election-related threats, violence and other breaches of Electoral Code Conduct which unless stopped can plunge our country into perpetual violence, strife and misery;
STRONGLY OPPOSE AND CONDEMN all acts of actual and threatened violence against innocent and defenceless citizens being perpetrated by political party cadres, particularly in Lusaka and Copperbelt in the run-up, during and after the 20th September 2011 elections;
CALL UPON our leaders and their cadres to serve and protect the interest of the people of Zambia against such criminal elements;
URGE ALL those that are tasked with promoting our peace to ensure that perpetrators of political violence are arrested and prosecuted irrespective of political party affiliation, both ruling and opposition. In this regard, we reiterate our earlier appeal to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia to work hand in hand with the judiciary to set up special fast-track courts aimed at exclusively dealing with election-related offenses. It is our considered view that such a measure would considerably assist to promptly deal with offenders as a deterrent.
