Stop the FBISD Global Science Center
STOP THE FBISD GLOBAL CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (GCST)
The proposed GCST was approved by the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) Board of Trustees in 2009 at a construction cost of $26.4 Million ($26,400,000.00).
Annual Maintenance costs are projected to be $550,000 which does not include transportation of 36,000 students from campuses to the center.
In 2010, FBISD declared a financial emergency and laid off over 400 employees. Some campus level art classes were suspended.
The reason given for this center was to improve science scores on standardized tests. Is there evidence that this building will raise scores? There is little if any public support for this spending project.
In 2009 the Houston Museum of Natural Science opened a new science museum approximately two miles from the proposed GCST.
We, the Voters within FBISD, hereby petition the Board of Trustees to revote and reject the project known as the Global Center for Science and Technology. This vote should take place at the next public school board meeting approximately one month from the date this petition is presented to the Board of Trustees.
