The Tall Ships showcased a new use for the historic Sugar Sheds in Greenock, filling it with people, song, music, food and dance. The regeneration plans for the building will see it developed into new office space. With the town littered with empty retail and office space, do we really need to spend money on some more empty offices? Or is it time to think more creatively about how to use and resource that space? We believe that there are other solutions and opportunities for the space, from promoting local business in a covered market space, through to performances from high quality music acts, from weddings and ceilidhs to art exhibitions and events, all within a unique venue. As such, we believe that the current plans for regeneration be reviewed, and that representatives from the community be involved in exploring alternative uses and opportunities for the Sugar Sheds in a way that could be beneficial to developers and the community. We also believe, that the current owners should consider immediately, potential short term use of the building as a venue, while physical regeneration is not yet taking place.
