Aleister Crowley took up his residence at Villa Santa Barbara at Cefalu, located in Palermo, Sicily – ITALY during the 1920s, and he afterwards transformed it into the Rableaisian Monastery Thelema Abbey (or Abbey of Thelema).

At Cefalu, Crowley was mainly climber, painter and prolific writer. He personally painted the walls of his residence and he also made some artworks during that period of time, that are actually in Australia. His figure is considered between the 100 most important figures in England and it is often of mediatic attention and interest.

Already Leonardo Sciascia, Fosco Maraini, Vincenzo Consolo, Giuseppe Quatriglio, Marco Fax, Pietro Saja, Domenico Portera, Nico Marino, Alberto Samonà, Antonino Napoli, Marco Pasi, Massimo Introvigne, and others in Italy have seriously dealed with this charachter and with his stay that inspired films as those by Kenneth Anger and by Ferdinando Vincentini Orgnani, more a wide musical productions that ranges from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin, from the Iron Maiden to Coil, the Current 93, Coph Nia, but also Ozzy Osbourne, Graham Bond and many others.

The house in which he lived is considered a cultural object from the Italian State and it is a so important momument that has always been the pilgrimage destination for a wide international community.

It is actually in a state of serious degradation and abandonement: the roof of the building is going to fall and the murals inside of it, partially compromized, risk to fade.

Signing the petition you want to save the Abbey and its paintings.

Crowley a Cefalù fu principalmente alpinista, pittore e scrittore prolifico.

Seeing this level of support for the Abbey is overwhelming because it proves I am not the only one who cares about preserving this history. We have created real momentum for the restoration of these walls and the murals that are so close to being lost forever.

Seeing one hundred people recognize the historical gravity of the Abbey of Thelema is deeply moving to me. These walls carry the memory of Crowley and his art but they are crumbling fast. Your support proves that this place means something to the world beyond just a ruin in Sicily.

Regardless of one's views towards Crowley, Thelema, or occultism in general, the Abbey of Thelema is certainly a huge historical landmark of the twentieth century and like any other relic of time it should stand.

The preservation of cult & culture is ever at stake. Let not this be another sad example of crass ignorance and haste in denying the importance of Aleister Crowley's legacy to Western culture, however maligned or denied is this fact by the ignorant. 93!

This is a significant historic site and also a potentially important touristic location. It would be very unfortunate if it were allowed to decay further.

this is part of our cultural history, and I would very much want to see it preserved - these links with the past are precious, and this contains not just some of Crowley's past, but also his art work. He is an important figure, and one of the greatest for modern for magick, and this would be an imprtant project

Visited Cefalu 10 years ago. Spent 5 hours trying to locate the Abbey ! Not much info back then as to its whereabouts. The Abbey is definitely a Heritage worthy monument. Thousands throughout the World have been inspired by Crowley. He was voted 75th most famous man in Britain a few years back. This site needs preserving .
