We, the undersigned, urge your immediate action on downtown Hamilton's historic, 96-year-old Royal Connaught Hotel, on the property bounded by John, King, Catherine and Main in downtown Hamilton. (112 King St. East and 92 King St. East)
The Royal Connaught is currently not designated as a heritage building. We urge council to fast-track the heritage designation currently being considered by staff.
This building is an important part of our City's built heritage, and the owners need to understand their responsibilities to maintain and protect this building in hopes that it can be eventually be restored and revitalized.
The future development plans for the Royal Connaught are for now unclear. But we hope with this petition to make one thing abundantly clear: the citizens of Hamilton will not allow this building to be subtracted from the skyline and added to a landfill.
We urge you to do the right thing and give the Royal Connaught the heritage designation it rightly deserves.
