The goal of this petition is to draw awareness to New York State laws regarding sexual assault or misconduct involving any kind of animal. Currently the charge for this crime is a "misconduct charge," and is considered a Class A misdemeanor. The possible punishment for zoophilia includes $1000 fine at most and up to a year in jail. However the typical punishment is $200 and no jail time. Rarely is restitution paid to a farmer of producing animals or owner of a domestic animal. New York state's zoophilia law was passed in 1613. However, due to recent events in both Hamilton and Suffolk counties, a revision is clearly needed. New York nor any place should not tolerate animal abuse of any kind. Animals do not have a voice and it is up to us to protect them.
