Currently, study periods are considered 'academic periods' used to organise our studies and cannot be spent in either the Music School or the Gym.

This petition seeks to persuade the College that the 6th Form are mature enough to use all of our time in a productive manner that is conducive to us being all rounded Marlburians. This being true, we should therefore have the ability to use our study periods as we desire.

To dictate how we use our time contrasts what the College, by adopting the IB system, seeks to make us: 'Independent Learners'. Moreover, we all have different schedules and so we should have the ability to organise our studies accordingly. For example Day Pupils may choose to use the Music School/Gym during a study period and do all work at home, since they do not have the school's facilities at home. Finally, being at the top of the school, we should be trusted to show the younger years how to balance work and play.

Nevertheless, the purpose of the policy that restricts study periods to pure academics is for our own good: the College fears that our studies will be undermined by our extra-curricular pursuits. However, being as 'Independent' as we are, the College's default stance should not be to take such precautions. Therefore we should take it upon ourselves to prove that we are, and should be considered, independent. In light of this, the Prefects propose:

That pupils who achieve above a given average effort grade on their orders and show an ability to effectively manage their time should be entrusted to use their study periods in a productive manner.

By signing this petition you pledge to be diligent academically and understand that academics are your priority.

This petition will not guarantee a change in policy.
