BA in Hawaiian Language for Neighbor Island Students
There is currently no way for students on Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Kauaʻi to continue learning Hawaiian and earn a BA in Hawaiian language. Unfortunately not everyone has the option to move to another island to attend either UH Mānoa or UH Hilo to complete their degree in Hawaiian Language. So, if the other language courses (e.g. HAW 331, HAW 332, etc) were offered using the ITV system through UH Mānoa it would allow those of us on the neighbor islands to achieve the BA in Hawaiian Language from UH Mānoa, i.e. we would become UH Mānoa students after completing the AA HWST as UH Maui (or UH Kauaʻi) students. This would also have the benefit of boosting overall enrollment in these classes, the BA in Hawaiian Language program in general, while providing an avenue for students of Maui and Kauaʻi counties to continue learning Hawaiian and achieve the BA. Even if only 1 or 2 of these courses were offered through ITV per semester it would allow us to make progress toward our degree every semester. There is a large demand in our schools for teachers who speak Hawaiian. Offering the BA in Hawaiian would help to meet that need.
