Environmental Impact Assessment for the Mai Po visitor centre
WWF Hong Kong have proposed demolition and reconstruction of the Peter Scott Field Studies Centre at Mai Po. The visitor centre and car park are scheduled to be closed from spring 2019. So far, WWF have refused to produce an Environmental Impact Assessment for this site, despite being within the internationally important wetlands at Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site.
We request that WWF Hong Kong should publish their plans at this site so that the Hong Kong public can know what is being proposed. This should include at least:
- The reasons and justification for demolishing and replacing the building, including an explanation of why this is in the public interest.
- Designs for the new building.
- A summary of arrangements for visitors using the site during the construction phase.
- An evaluation of all potential environmental impacts including (but not limited to) disturbance impacts to birds and other wildlife using nearby wetlands; treatment of sewage produced; and traffic arrangements following the closure of the existing car park.
- Proposed mitigation measures to ensure that the potential environmental impacts will not have a detrimental impact on the conservation value of the surrounding wetlands.
