Every year, the Haycock community -- teachers, parents and children -- look forward to the annual Kindergarten Halloween parade. This time honored tradition features Haycock's youngest citizens who take pride in showing off their costumes, while the older kids and adults cheer them on. This is one afternoon that is all about our Kindergartners -- and they LOVE it!

We, the parents of Haycock children are saddened that this all American tradition is being eliminated by our school without input and proper discussions with the Haycock community. While we acknowledge that the Halloween tradition has its roots in religious beliefs, today the holiday is no longer closely associated with religion and is instead a celebration of the season and the chance for children of all ages to have a little fun. By signing this petition, we hope that the Haycock administration will see that the community supports the Kindergarten Halloween parade and will allow it to continue this year and on into the future as the Kindergarten teachers and their children see fit. PLEASE BRING BACK HAYCOCK HALLOWEEN!

Updates

October 15, 2016

The school administration remains silent on our requests for a meeting regarding the parade. Post this petition to your Facebook timeline right now to ensure they see we are not dropping this issue. Text three neighbors and ask them to sign if they want this tradition restored.

The momentum behind this effort proves that our community is unwilling to watch this tradition disappear without a real fight. Post this link on your Facebook feed today and email your local rep to demand they prioritize our children over administration policy.

I don't have any kindergarteners, but I am very disappointed to hear this long-standing tradition is being cancelled. It allows children to enjoy the holiday, express their interests and be creative.

This is very disappointing especially only hearing about it a couple weeks before Halloween. If anything, keep the parade this year then consult with teachers and families for a decision for future years.

Parent of a McLean HS freshman and a Junior at Madeira...traditions are important and administrative decisions should be transparent. Let the parents vote, discuss decision with the PTA executive committee.

I wasn't planning on signing since I have a 6th grader and it didn't affect me -- so I showed this to her she said, "That's the best part of October! We love seeing the kindergartners in their costumes! They can't take it away - it's tradition."

Very disappointed to learn this was cancelled without any consultation with parents and teachers. And we haven't been notified by the school. Especially after already telling our kindgarten son about how he gets to wear his costume to school on Halloween and be in a parade

Mother of four children -- kindergartners past, present, and future -- who doesn't want to see this lovely tradition disappear!

As a concerned parent, I'd like to support this petition. Tradition is what makes a great school great.

I am certain that the decision was well-intentioned. I hope that the school reconsiders its decision in light of this petition.
