Re: Lucy Beckham High School Sports Facility Partnership
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am a resident of Mount Pleasant. I would like to ask for your support for Lucy Beckham High School’s access to sports facilities. The 1500 LBHS zoned families are specifically asking for a partnership with the Town of Mt. Pleasant to provide access to tennis, baseball, and swimming facilities which are all located within direct proximity to the new high school. The Wando South baseball field is located directly across the road from Beckham’s campus and the community’s long time expectation has been that it would be available when the new high school is finished. The hope is to see this field designated for use by Beckham students, as was the arrangement when Wando occupied that site.
Furthermore, it seems to be a given for a Beckham swim team to have the same opportunities Wando swimmers enjoy. Since the Park West pool is made available for Wando students, the R.L. Jones Center could similarly provide an appropriate location for a Beckham team. Similar expectations exist for tennis, with the hope that an arrangement can be made for courts on Whipple Road to be made accessible to students or parking requirements arranged to make space for us to build on our own property.
With the publicity surrounding Oceanside, it is important that we emphasize our support for all recreation. However, prioritizing resources for 1500 families zoned for a Mt. Pleasant and Charleston County public school over a for-profit non-CCSD school with 600 students from other counties is an issue that needs your close attention; and ours.
Thank you for your willingness to represent our town. This is a difficult job and I look forward to seeing Mount Pleasant and Lucy Beckham High School working together to ensure all of our kids have access to sports facilities as an integral part of their high school experience
