The Ewaso Ng'iro river unifies and divides communities in the basin in equal measure. In a period of increasing human population, large scale agricultural activities, infrastructure development, and climate change, the river dries up, get polluted, and contested.

Water users, including communities, livestock & wildlife, the public sector, and corporate entities, both upstream middle and downstream, often lack a shared understanding of the threats facing the river system and fail to effectively collaborate around integrated water resources management. This is leading to conflict and an escalation of the threats facing river systems.

The Ewaso Ng’iro Camel Caravan concept was first initiated in 2013 by Partners for Resilience Program (PFR) led by IMPACT and MID-P. By 2018, Members of Pastoralists Alliance for Resilience and Adaptation in Northern Kenya (PARAN) Alliance - Isiolo Peace Link (IPL), Waso Trust land Project (WTLP), Kivulini Trust and Isiolo Conservationist Trust (ICT) joined the campaign/movement and implemented successful campaigns.

The 2023 Ewaso Ng’iro Camel Caravan is scheduled to take place from 4th to 9th August 2023 from downstream finishing at Archer’s post. A number of registered volunteers and partners shall join the 6 days’ walk as we sensitize river users on the need to conserve and restore the Ewaso Ng’iro.

We are requesting you to add your voice in asking our government and other stakeholders to intensify the protection and conservation of River Ewaso Ng'iro which is the lifeline of the North. These efforts include but are not limited to;

1. End illegal water abstraction along the river basin

2. Eliminate pollution of the river and its feeders

3. Undertake growth of protective vegetation around the river

4. Promote sustainable agricultural practices to avoid degradation of the river

5. Rehabilitate and protect all tributaries and streams of the River

6. Improve stakeholder collaborations to enhance coordinated approach for water resource management of the river

7. Enhance youth, women and PWDs leadership in water resource management structures

8. Promote re-afforestation efforts all along the river basin

9. Encourage concerted efforts for coordinated conservation of both upstream and downstream communities.

10. Implementation of the Lake Olbolosat Management Plan that aims to protect Lake Olbolosat which is the source of River Ewaso Nyiro
