Professor Andrew Hamilton-Wright has not been performing his job adequately.

We, the Bachelor of Computing students taking CIS*3110 this semester, believe that Professor Andrew-Hamilton Wright has not been able to teach the class adequately to have been given a fair chance on the recent midterm. The vast majority of the midterm questions were not based on content he discussed during the lecture, even though he explicitly said that the content would come mainly from his lectures and that the suggested exercises would be adequate to perform well. This was false - and to make matters worse, even the suggested textbook readings did not line up with the questions that were given on the midterm.

Even the midterm itself had grammatical or spelling mistakes in a considerable number of questions - suggesting that Professor Andrew-Hamilton Wright did not even proof-read his own midterm thoroughly. Some other factors include:

1. Outdated slides and exercises from 2009 that were used in another class at another university. The course code from that class is present in the exercises - see COMP3911 Mount Allison University.

2. Continuing with exercises, the solutions that are given are not clear - leaving the solutions themselves up for interpolation

3. Examples on the slides contain MANY mistakes and lack information. Andrew Hamilton-Wright claims that the slides are primarily for diagrams in which would be discussed in class; but little to none of the actual content discussed in lecture was actually reflected on the midterm. This again shows his incompetence in proof-reading his own content and tests that are to be used by students.

4. Assignments contained many errors on them - which Professor Andrew Hamilton-Wright was correcting all the way up to the date the assignment was due. There was one announcement acknowledging a mistake on a Friday just before the due date on Monday, even though the assignment had been released for two weeks. The assignment which was due on January 27th still has not been graded yet. The only grade we have received since the start of the semester is from the 1% lab quiz we took during the first full week of classes.

5. One of the sections of the first lab had a TA who didn't even show up. The students in that section had to take their own initiative to complete the lab quiz that was posted.

In many cases where a professor has not been able to teach competently, students have been able to effectively self-learn and demonstrate their learnings on the exam. This is not possible when the exam created by the professor themselves decides to put content that is not discussed in lectures or is even in the textbook readings that were suggested. We, the students, were not only given an inadequate education for this course, but were also given an unfair test that does not demonstrate what we actually learned. As a result, we either have to drop the course in hopes of receiving a proper education and fair examination the next year, or pass through the course without the objectives of the course actually being met due to the low quality of instruction received. This is not just a matter of wasted time and energy. Being unable to provide proper education to students hurts both the reputation of the university in the long run, while also being unable to provide the growth students need to succeed in their future.

Since the midterm, there are now over 90 ratings of 1/5 for Andrew Hamilton-Wright on ratemyprofessor. Many students have shared their experience for the disorganization of the course and the unfair examination we received on the platform.

We ask to receive a different professor to teach CIS*3110 Operating Systems. If that is not feasible in the current semester, please refrain from letting Professor Andrew Hamilton-Wright from teaching this particular course. We are unfortunately currently being set up for failure with the widespread amount of concern the midterm has gotten. We urge the university to address these concerns to ensure fair academic standards and quality education for all students.

At the very least, we could receive a removal of the "pass the exam" portion to pass the course for this semester. If Andrew Hamilton-Wright is allowed to continue teaching this course, an entire audit and overhaul of his course materials should be required. Please review the midterm exam he has given to the class and the course material he has provided to determine the fairness of the exam that was given to us.
