Williams Lake has experienced a spike in the number of "dangerous" wildlife encounters this summer. I accent the word dangerous because  in the recent weeks even seeing a bear has been enough justification for conservation officers to hunt and destroy the animal. One article headline reads, "Over a dozen bears killed locally in the past 24 hours". This is unacceptable. We are gathering signatures to show Mayor Kerry Cook that we, the residents of Williams Lake, do not accept this destruction of our wildlife. Our group meets with her Tuesday 2nd and will be requesting that a public meeting that place, with her and both CO's of our city present. Our ultimate goal is to have Williams Lake adopt the "Bear Smart Program" or something similar. Please contact [email protected] for more information. There is also more sign sheets located at: Wildwood Race Trac Gas, Amberama Do's and Estetics, and the WLSPCA.

The momentum behind this petition proves that Williams Lake is fed up with the senseless slaughter of our bears. We have Mayor Kerry Cook and her conservation officers backed into a corner and we are not letting up until they answer for this destruction.

Totally agree. Killing a dozen bears in one day is insane. We need bear smarts not extermination.

Keep our bears alive. It is our fault they are coming into town looking for food because we dont secure our garbage properly. Stop killing them for just being animals.

Heartbreaking to hear about this. They were here first.
