As it stands at George Mason University, Western Civilization and World History are the only options students have to fulfill the history requirement within Mason Core. While these classes are important, they cover topics that many students already learn in their compulsory education experience.
I am proposing the addition of an African history course which would overview the history of Africa--which many students are unfamiliar with--while still being inclusive of other civilizations and cultures within the course.

its honestly wild that we still dont have this option in 2017. lets get more diversity in the curriculum for real
It would really be nice to have that as a course option when I transfer to GMU.
I'm required to learn American History but it doesn't include the good things Black Americans have done for America except for slavery. I'd like to learn about my own history without having to spend extra money to do it.
Great initiative and opportunity for more Mason Students to learn about African History
African-American History is also U.S History. I believe it is important to have the option to get the full picture of US History which includes the narratives of African Americans and their history.

I, alongside thousands of other Mason students who share my identity, deserve to have our history pulled from the archives and placed in the forefront of our education alongside Western history. We deserve a comprehensive and thoughtful curriculum; we deserve to see our ancestors engaged in acts of agency beyond the traditional narrative of victimhood imposed on us.
