Hello,

Alan here, looking to serve as your 1L Dual JD Class Representative within the Student Bar Association.

I graduated with a Law & Society HBA from York University in 2018. Since graduating up until August 2020, I have worked as a Claims Adjuster, helping people on a daily basis get back up on their feet following insurable losses. I could continue to share how my undergrad, corporate job, or other jobs prior will help me serve you, but I’d like to make it more personal and have you actually get to know me.

I’m a first-generation immigrant, having fled my home country of Iraq when I was 9 years old. In fleeing war and religious persecution, my teenage siblings and I came to Canada. I grew up without my parents, as they left Iraq and immigrated to the U.S when I was 6 years old. To this day, my parents reside in Michigan, while my siblings and I are in Ontario. After immigrating, I lived in a low-income community that was and still is overwhelmed with violence. Based on these circumstances, I never had a real childhood or normal upbringing, as I had no guidance and was dealt a hand that only seemed to entail trouble.

Although this may seem sad, the aforementioned continuous hardships equipped me to handle ANY situation or challenge that I am faced with. I was never supposed to be in the position I am in today, yet here I am. It’s why I believe I’d make a great class representative. My rigorous work ethic will not only serve me, but us as a cohesive whole, in addressing any of our interests. Our togetherness through this unprecedented experience has been inspiring for me, and I will ensure that we maintain it throughout the year, whether it be academically or socially. We're stronger together.
