As members of the Alberta Public Service Pension Plan we petition the Government of Alberta on the following issues:

1) Plan Governance : We, the members contribute 50% of the pension plan and the GOA contributes 50%. But through the Min of Finance and the Crown Corp, AIMCo , the GOA has total control over our pension. We demand a fair and equitable JOINT governance arrangement with our employer. That includes the ability to choose and change the plan's investment management from AIMCo, a Crown Corporation owned by the GOA.

2) Separation of the Management Employee Pension Plan ("MEPP") from the PSPP: The MEPP is a richly funded pension, at 36% employee contribution and 64% from the employer. The MEPP drains the PSPP because its the management salaries that are used to determine benefits received from the PSPP.

3) All Changes to the PSPP and its governing legislation must have a transparent process that must include full consultation with and approval by the membership.

Updates

October 17, 2013

We are currently preparing a formal briefing document that outlines the specific governance failures we have identified. This report will be submitted directly to the Minister of Finance to demand a shift toward joint control over our pension assets.

October 17, 2013

The current momentum has prompted a formal request for a meeting with the Minister of Finance to discuss joint governance. We are finalizing the briefing documents that outline the necessary separation of management and employee plans.

The MEPP is the least sustainable of all pension plans yet it seems it's the only one to stay. With the planned changes it will be 100% taxpayer funded in the future. Realistically if the government is looking to permanently damage the relationship with its workforce it is succeeding. If the PC party continues on this course you will have to worry about your 147k a year pension because you will be collecting it soon.

I am disgusted with this government and their endless attacks on benefits of GOA employees.

If these changes are made I will intensify my search for work OUTSIDE the government. The Conservatives have already lost my vote due to this and many other issues.

It is far overdue to practice fair and equitable governance of our pension. What kind of management is it where 1 party makes 1/2 the contributions to the plan but have no control over those funds? Please respect our intelligence and right to determine our future direction.

We, as the Public Service, have worked extremely hard on behalf of the government KNOWING that we will, at some point, be able to retire. Changing the rules in the middle of the game is not something we can or should sit back and let happen.

We are not just public servants we are also the voting public and deserve the right to a fair dignified retirement for the hard work we do in supporting Albertans.
