We are requesting Allendale Public Schools to expand bussing so that transportation is once again provided for all elementary students, kindergarten through 3rd grade. Allendale Public Schools created "walk zones" that eliminated bussing to certain areas near the school campus beginning with school year 2020-21. These walk zones have forced some of our youngest, most vulnerable students to walk a significant distance alone to school, often in the dark and sometimes without sidewalks. In addition, the nature of the Allendale Public School campus (with four school buildings being in close proximity) causes high traffic volumes at the beginning and end of the school day when young students are now being forced to walk home. We feel this is unsafe and are justifiably concerned that is it only a matter of time until someone is hurt.

Updates

April 26, 2021

I am currently consolidating the safety reports and traffic volume data to include in a formal request for a meeting with the school board. My team is preparing a letter that outlines the specific risk factors created by the current walk zone policy. Expect a summary of their official response as soon as it arrives.

Please consider developmental appropriateness of children’s ages when designating walking areas. Stop putting our most vulnerable kiddos at risk with street crossing, safety, and navigation requirements not appropriate for their skills.

I always found it ironic that they reduced the number of bus routes and then immediately turned around and voted to spend a huge sum of money to buy new buses.

I understand not having kids ride the bus that can see the school but the current situation is not safe for many kids. I am a crossing guard that watches it everyday.

The elimination of bus transportation will force our kiddos to walk through a neighborhood filled with construction traffic and without sidewalks for safe walking. This is an unacceptable budget cut.

I completely agree. The distance that young children are being asked to walk is unacceptable. The neighborhood does not have an adequate number of crossing guards and in the mornings it is difficult to see the children. Additionally, as a homeowner in that area, the increased traffic during those hours has become a major inconvenience. It has become very difficult to get out of my driveway during those times.

I’m not okay with having my 5/6 yr old walk about 1 mile to school each day without supervision.
