With the violence directed towards law enforcement officials, agencies everywhere are gearing up to prepare and protect themselves from this violence. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections policy states that no firearms are to be carried in personal vehicles on state property, meaning they cannot carry a firearm for protection when on their way to and from work. A majority of Corrections officers work the mid day shift, which means they leave their facility after dark. What's stopping someone from waiting outside these facilities off grounds and catching an officer at a red light near by? Or following one to see where they live and pushing violence towards their families when they get out of the car? We should not wait for something bad like this to happen to adjust policy. There is nothing currently stopping people from bringing firearms onto state property, so why not allow these officers to keep their firearm locked in their vehicle so they can have a fighting chance for survival to and from work? We should never allow ourselves to forget about ALL law enforcement officers during this time. Retaliation happens, let us protect ourselves so we do not become another statistic.
