Allow Winter Sports at Chateaugay Central School
Petition to Approve High-Risk Sports at CCS
We, the undersigned, show support for the School Board for the Chateaugay Central School District to overturn their previous decision to deny students to participate in winter sports at CCS.
Winter-sports, namely basketball, has been deemed a “high-risk sport” by the CDC with regard to the spread of Covid-19. The CDC has also stated, “Evidence from several studies suggests that children and adolescents may be less commonly infected with SARS-CoV-2 than adults,” and “Evidence suggests that staff-to-staff transmission is more common than transmission from students to staff, staff to student, or student to student,” and “When mitigation strategies – especially mask use and physical distancing – are consistently and correctly used, the risk of transmission in the school environment is decreased.” We believe the mitigation strategies and policies established by Michelle “Babs” Reynolds will greatly decrease the chances our community will be adversely affected playing basketball.
Currently, all the other school districts in Section X, as well as the North Country, are allowing winter sports with modifications in place. If the CCS School Board has some statistical evidence to show our community is more at risk from basketball than from the various community members that work in many various occupations outside of the Chateaugay area, or other scientific and statistical evidence that shows winter sports should not be played, it should be presented to the community so they can have an understanding of their decision.
