We, the undersigned, being local residents, shoppers and traders,
urge Brighton and Hove City Council:
1) to support our plans for an improved London Road, retaining and enhancing its unique qualities as a culturally diverse area with a thriving market and a large number of small businesses, shops and amenities serving the local community.
2) to reject any moves by large companies to turn the area into a 'clone town' with the demolition of historic frontages and structures, the displacement of local businesses, the privatisation of public spaces and the building of another large store or supermarket.
3) to reject any proposals which would bring more vehicles into the area through the provision of a large car park and modifications to traffic flows in adjacent streets.

ANOTHER LONDON ROAD was formed in response to plans to build a 100,000 sq feet Tesco store with parking for up to 1000 vehicles at the Northern end of Brighton's London Road. This proposal also involves new tall buildings and the demolition of everything in the area bounded by London Rd, York Hill, New England St and New England Hill, including New England House.
Hundreds of jobs, the small businesses, specialist shops, and homes will be lost. The area already has serious pollution problems, but the plan's air quality model remains untested.
But this proposal is not a done deal and planning permission has not yet been granted.
ANOTHER LONDON ROAD is a group organised by local community members who believe that another future is possible for London Road, with a vision that is shaped from within the community, serving our needs rather than those of big business and distant share holders.
