The purpose of this petition is to create an Organizational Affiliate within the American Counseling Association, titled the Association of Women and Counseling (AWC). The mission of the AWC is to to empower and advocate for women and girls, within and outside the profession, through a wellness, developmental, and strengths-based approach. We recognize that girls and women have unique concerns across the lifespan that exist at the intersection of multiple identities (e.g., cisgender, transgender, race/ethnicity, affectional orientation, socioeconomic status, age, spirituality, nationality, disability) and histories. We are devoted to promoting scholarship, advocacy, cultural competency, leadership, teaching, and best practice models regarding issues affecting girls and women. The AWC also specifically addresses issues of sexism, inequality, capitalism, violence, and other concerns that impact women and girls not only for clients, but also for the students, educators, practitioners, and supervisors in our field, nationally and globally. The AWC embraces feminist and womanist principles in counseling girls and women and transgender and cisgender men to address issues of inequality and solutions that benefit all genders.
