Dear CIS Community. It has been a while since the bag rule was first announced, when it was accompanied by sheer shock, exasperation, and passive resistance by both students and staff. Students’ confidence in the school administration has been undermined at the prospect of being forbidden to carry bags, a fundamental and ubiquitous aspect of student life. It may not be an exaggeration to claim that the respectability of CIS has been compromised. The only corrective measure is to formally reverse this rule.
Why are we not communicating this issue through official student voice channels? It is simple: protracted negotiations by student bodies- the Student Council, Senior Student Committee, Head Boy and Head Girl alike- have yielded no concrete results.
We ask you, the students, teachers and parents of this esteemed school, to support this petition to end the bag rule. We are comfortable with an arrangement where bags are forbidden from corridor floors to prevent congestion and where bags must be placed under classroom tables or shelves to ensure safety within classrooms. This compromise would be far more practical and acceptable to students.
Most of you are already against this rule. You might ask "Since I'm most unaffected by this rule, why should I sign?" The answer is again simple: as students, we would like to be honest and rule-abiding- currently an impossible task given the impractical bag rule. By ending this rule, we can end a huge source of friction between the student, the teachers, and the administration.
The bag rule has numerous drawbacks but little to no benefit. If you are interested, we offer a rebuttal to the rationale for the bag rule and also explain the objectionable nature of the bag rule's introduction here.
This petition is not directed at any individual. Our efforts are meant to solely promote the repeal of the bag rule with dignity and respect. We will be formally submitting this petition to the school administration on the 28th of February.
