Greetings to the members of Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. This petition is on behalf of all VCSO employees that agree it is long overdue for the male facial hair policy to be less restrictive. This suggestion respectfully requests VCSO implements a similar facial hair policy to the language below, which was inspired by the policies of VCSO, Harris County Sheriff's Office, and the Oakley Police Department.
FACIAL HAIR:
For male sworn members, and male professional staff, mustaches shall be permitted so long as they do not extend below the upper lip. Additionally, goatees are allowed with mustaches, provided the lower margin of the goatee follows the jaw line and does not extend more than one-half inch under the jaw. The mustache and goatee must connect.
Lastly, staff may wear beards that are neatly trimmed, well-groomed and are professional in appearance. Beards shall not pose a safety hazard, nor interfere with emergency equipment, such as wearing a gas mask. The overall length is not to exceed one inch. Beards shall not be allowed to grow to or on the neck. If an employee is planning to grow a beard, it is to be done during a leave of at least two weeks to allow adequate time for a presentable growth and to prevent an unkempt appearance to the public.
Adopting the aforementioned revisions will, at a minimum, boost recruitment, alleviate the irritation of male staff negatively affected by close shaves, and boost the overall morale of members that prefer to wear a professional looking manly beard. Please support this effort to be more in line with other agencies practicing a less restrictive facial hair policy. Your time and consideration is appreciated.

I have been hearing from so many of you about the daily skin irritation and the simple desire for a more modern policy. This is about professional autonomy and feeling comfortable in our own skin while we serve the community.

Seeing this level of support from my colleagues proves that I am not the only one tired of dealing with constant skin irritation while on the clock. It feels incredible to know so many of you are ready to update these outdated standards.

My husband works so hard and gets constant skin irritation from shaving every single day. Just let them have trimmed beards, it looks professional anyway.
LONG OVERDUE. Recruitment is down everywhere and this is such an easy fix to boost morale.

Harris County Sheriff's Office (Texas); Facial Hair Policy: 1. Clean Shaven – No facial hair. 2. Mustache a. Must be trimmed and not extend below the upper line of the upper lip. b. If worn alone, may not extend below the corners of the mouth. c. Extreme styles such as handlebar mustaches are prohibited. 3. Goatee – a mustache that extends down around the side of the mouth and joins hair on the chin, also referred to as a circle beard. a. Must be worn with a mustache. b. The cheeks, jaw line, and neck must remain clean shaven. 4. Natural Beard – also referred to as a full set. a. Must be worn with a mustache. b. Must cover the complete jaw line. c. Cheeks must be shaved on and above the cheekbone. d. The neck must be no more than one inch below the jaw line. 5. The following styles of facial hair are NOT permitted: a. Chin Strap Beards – Beards that are trimmed to a thin line along the jaw. b. Patchy Beards – Beards of uneven or patchy growth. c. Stubble – Beards shorter than 1/16th of an inch. 6. Facial hair must conform to the following restrictions: a. The bulk of the beard (distance that the mass of facial hair protrudes from the skin of the face must not exceed half an inch and be kept trimmed to a consistent length; b. The beard will consist of a naturally-occurring hair color; c. No designs may be shaved into facial hair; d. Facial hair must be neatly sculpted and trimmed. 7. Supervisors must ensure employees conform to an approved style of facial hair. NOTE: This policy recognizes that facial hair rate of growth may vary for different employees. As such, employees will be allowed a reasonable period of time for their facial hair to “grow in”.

Its 2018 people. A beard doesnt make you less of a cop. Let the guys have some facial hair.
