Petition Against Proposed Changes to Belle Meade Boulevard

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed changes to Belle Meade Boulevard
to create a pedestrian lane on either side of the median for recreational purposes. We
believe the changes will result in the following detrimental effects on our community:
Reduction of Green Space: The proposed modifications to decrease the width of the
median would decrease valuable green space, which has long been a cherished feature
of our community. Currently the plan is to create a 5 ft. pedestrian path on each side of
the median which is the bare minimum under FHWA guidelines and would result in
taking out portions of the median on both sides along with any trees or shrubs in those
areas.
Narrowing of Lanes: The plan to reduce the width of lanes on the boulevard will lead
to increased traffic congestion, potentially making the area more dangerous for both
drivers and pedestrians. There is limited area on the roadway now and the required
addition of “6-8 inch high and one foot wide buffers -the design of which is yet to be
determined”- along with required reflective double striped lines, markings and signs at
every entry point along the Boulevard to comply with required safety standards will
significantly diminish the aesthetics of our community.
Safety Concerns: The proposal includes the addition of multiple crosswalks, signs,
reflectors, and concrete buffers—measures that will alter the landscape of the boulevard
and the ensuing increase volume of pedestrians both from within and outside our
community potentially increases the risk of accidents.
Existing Alternatives for Exercise: Our community is fortunate to have over 3,000
acres of space dedicated to outdoor recreation, along with a nearby greenway that
provides ample opportunities for physical activity. The proposed changes do not
address a true need for exercise space, but rather seem to be a response to a
perceived issue that is already adequately met elsewhere.
We believe these changes would negatively impact the quality of life for residents,
disrupt traffic flow, and waste valuable green space. We urge decision-makers to
reconsider these plans and focus on solutions that better serve the community’s needs.
The capital expenditure of 3.8 million dollars to execute this plan is inappropriate given
the negative response from most constituents on a similar previously proposed plan to
alter the landscape of our beloved median along Belle Meade Blvd.
We respectfully request the removal of these proposed changes to Belle Meade
Boulevard and encourage a more thoughtful, community-oriented approach to
development.
