As you may have heard, the KU Leuven, the encompassing head organisation over LUCA School of Arts, wants to move the library of Sint-Lukas Brussels from its current location. This would be in an effort to consolidate the libraries of other higher education institutions into a mega-library situated at Pacheco close to Rogier. In this new situation, the librarians would sit on a separate floor from the books, which would create a 'silent' library. This is the complete opposite of the current atmosphere of the library which is a place of conversation.

Pim and Peter Jan, the librarians at Bibliotheek Sint-Lukas, are well known to the students at school. They play the biggest part in providing the right tools, authors, films, artists, inspiration for community-building. Having them leave to a new location would make a big rupture within this school. Not only would this displace a centre of knowledge away from the school, but also deprives the students of easy access to resources and new discovery.

The Sint-Lukas library is an enormous part of the student culture: students use the space for studying, meeting & relaxing. It is a place where art disciplines meet, where knowledge is accessible, where questions find their answers. The library is an integral part of the life and energy of the school. The Sint-Lukas monthly book club is organised by the library, the Cine-capella in the library is the new state-of-the-art screening room used often by the student-run cinema club, the vitrines and front tables of the library offer new spaces for exhibition and research; there is no end to the enrichment that our library offers. To remove the library from Paleizenstraat 70 would be a tragedy and an insult to the librarians and students who together make our library special in a beautiful symbiosis.
