Stop BP dumping pollution in Lake Michigan
Indiana regulators have permitted the BP oil refinery in Whiting, Ind. to dump significantly more ammonia and industrial sludge into Lake Michigan. BP is already one of the largest polluters along the Great Lakes. Under this new state water permit, BP can release 54% more ammonia and 35% more sludge into Lake Michigan each day. According to the Chicago Tribune, federal and state officials have acknowledged that this the first time in years that a company has been allowed to dump more toxic waste into Lake Michigan. Millions of Americans use Lake Michigan as their source of drinking water. For the sake of 80 jobs in Indiana, residents of Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan may suffer health and environmental effects of the increased ammonia and sludge. Please sign this petition if you agree that Indiana regulators should repeal this decision and instead take active steps to reduce the pollution of Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is a national treasure which is the jewel of our area. We should not take it for granted.
