The Bucks Road Campsite and swimming hole in Featherston is a treasure, beloved by our local community and visitors alike. As such it becomes very busy in the summer months, and the current facilities are unable to cope.
The Wairarapa District has six DOC campgrounds. Bucks Road is the only free campground. The other five have better facilities and carry an overnight charge.
Currently Bucks Road Campground attracts antisocial behaviour. This includes rubbish dumping, un-permitted fires, campers overstaying, and large gatherings. The local community has reached out to DOC and offered to work together to improve the site.
We believe that presenting a campground with better facilities will encourage users to treat the site with more care and respect.
Additionally, the revenue generated though implementing an overnight charge will pay for its ongoing maintenance and management.
What will the upgrade include?
- Removal of hazardous gum trees.
- Installation of an upgraded and increased number of toilets.
- Installation of a shelter (with picnic table and rainwater collection).
- Installation of campground kiosk and signage.
- Relocation of existing Norski toilet.
- Exclusion of vehicles from main camping area (e.g., bollards).

The momentum behind this proposal continues to grow at an impressive rate. This surge in interest demonstrates that our community is deeply invested in the long-term stewardship of the Bucks Road site.

Such an important space for our local community and visitors to our town. Current facilities do not do it justice and upgraded facilities are sorely needed.
This is much needed and valuable work to ensure the upkeep of this valuable taonga.
